Christmas songs

What are your most and least favorite Christmas songs?

I hate the song about the little boy who is buying his dying mom new shoes. Christmas songs are not supposed to make you feel like crying!

I love the Red Baron/Snoopy song and most of the Bob Rivers songs.

Oh, and I love "Do they know it's Christmas"

"Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" is a personal favorite.

I don't care for "Silver Bells". Too slooooowwww.

Favorites would include Cold Blooded Christmas by Jon Lajoie.
Check it out and I'm sure it will become a new fav for you too. http://tinyurl.com/ypjk75
Also really like 'I Wanna Rock You Hard This Christmas' by The Dan Band.
Personally can't stand Snoopy's Christmas. Most mover played Christmas song ever.

Last Christmas by Wham!

Blue Christmas-Elvis

Carol of the Bells- Either the Trans-Siberian Orchestra version, or the Metallica version

Vicky, once again proving you do have diverse tastes!!!

May I recommend a country Christmas song I heard recently (I think it was Gretchen Wilson, who I normally don't like) in light of the ex-ex situation? It's all about how she doesn't have to worry about buying him (her ex) crap he's not going to like anyway...and not having to deal with his family...and watching whatever specials she wants to on tv...

I figure you might appreciate it...it had a line about merry christmas wherever in the hell you are

said sarcastic one on December 20, 2008 10:04 AM.

"Grandma got dismembered by a chainsaw" and "Chipmunks Roasting on an open fire" both by bob rivers

But seriously for classics i like "O Holy Night" sung by Charlotte Church.

Carol of the bells is best listened to when sung by the retarded burger king employee...

I forgot that version Sheriff!
Would you like an apple pie with that?
Would you like an apple pie with that?

SO- Thanks, it sounds pretty cool. Right up my alley right about now. A good riddance girly type song is always nice with a glass of wine on cold winter nights. =o)

I also hate that song Burl Ives sings, "Holly, Jolly Christmas".

I mean, the song is OK and all, but it's discriminatory against those who can hear well.

said Tim on December 20, 2008 3:30 PM.

I can't believe I overlooked this song when I wrote my first comment, but Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon would have to be my favorite Christmas song bar none.

said Frank the Tank on December 20, 2008 9:52 PM.

Anything but that shitty Bono/Bob Geldof thing from the 80's about hw there wont be snow in africa this year.

it's like one of those damn sally struthers commercials.

said Sheriff Pablo on December 20, 2008 11:35 PM.

Uh, SP ... that's "Do They Know It's Christmas". A Sarcky fave.

P.S. I hate it too. It seems as gay as gay can be don't 'cha know.

said Tim on December 21, 2008 12:24 AM.

As a veteran of many, many tours of retail duty, I tend to like the offbeat songs that don't make me tune them out...and calling one of my favorite songs gay is okay--that means it's girly!!!

But I agree with Frank on the War is over pick....

every year at christmas services in our anglican church in canada a boy's voice would start singing this song from the back of the church ... it was haunting then ... it still is ... this sends chills up my spine and for me will always be the song of christmas ...

It's weird - as the token Brit, I'm realizing how many of my Christmas songs are ones most of you will never have heard of - Slade's "So Here It Is, Merry Christmas", Mud's "It'll be Lonely This Christmas", Wizzard's "I wish it could be Christmas Every Day".

The English used to have a fine Christmas pop tradition, especially when Top of the Pops was still going - man, I miss that show.

This year i discovered a wonderful british gentleman named Kevin bloody Wilson and his magical christmas carol "Ho Ho F*cking Ho"

Excellent stuff.

said Sheriff Pablo on December 21, 2008 10:05 PM.

Kevin Bloody Wilson is actually australian.
I have had the joy of seeing him live, Very funny man.

said Frank the Tank on December 21, 2008 10:51 PM.

24 on radio, so I hate Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer with a passion even though I never played it after the first year it was released... I still got scads of requests and people who would threaten you if you didn't play it. That was annoying.

I love pretty much anything that didn't get constant airplay, like Go Tell It on the Mountain or the Hallelujah Chorus.

said Miss Cellania on December 22, 2008 3:48 AM.

Miss C and I def have our favorites. As I recall last year I declared the best Xmas song was "Merry Christmas with the Family" and she shot back with "Christmas in Jail."
I still stand by my decision but am a big fan of her choice now that I've heard it.

My favorite choice this year is by the 5 Chinese Brothers and is called "Christmas on Interstate 80."

'I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.'

Around the early- to mid-80s, I seem to remember there being a Cheech and Chong version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" that got a fair amount of airplay, although I have not heard it since.

It started out with, "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...a beer."

I don't remember the rest, except for "Fiiiiive gooooolden tokes!"

At the time, I didn't know what a "toke" was, and thought they were saying "Tooks," which puzzled me...why would a Hobbit family from Lord of the Rings be inserted into a Christmas song? (Yeah, I was a real badass when I was 11.)

Oh, and "Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer," which for me has gone full circle over 20+ years, from enjoyment, to sick-to-death-of-hearing-it, finally to can-once-again-enjoy-it-on-a-semi-non-ironic-level, much like the music of Rush.

said Jeem on December 23, 2008 12:05 PM.

Jeem, that wasn't cheech and chong, it was Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.(aka the McKenzie Brothers) The Guys from "Strange Brew" and regulars on SCTV back in the day.

and it actually was "Five Golden Tuques"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuque

It's basically a thick warm winter hat.

Here's the link to the vid by the way

said Sheriff Pablo on December 23, 2008 1:09 PM.

Ahh, so THAT'S what that was. Boy, did I misremember that one. It probably would have lodged itself in my memory banks better if I'd seen the video back then instead of just hearing it on the radio.

said Jeem on December 23, 2008 2:17 PM.

Cheech and Chong did do "Santa Claus and His Old Lady," but it was more narrative than song.

Speaking of narratives, a tradition for a local DJ was to play Burrough's "The Junky's Christmas" every year. Just lovely...

This year's new novelty song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1t90Bg9wAw (not the official video...)
