Whats your favorite and why?

For me, I would have to say Carlitos Way. This movie just came together for me. The acting was great, the story was fantastic. I must have seen it 6 or 7 times and it sucks me in every time, to me that is the mark of a great movie.
tying for second place are fight club and goodfellas. its the same thing, great acting, engaging story. could watch them over and over again.

Fight Club is first, Followed by Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I'm holding out great hope for Inglorious Basterds.

I couldn't name just one, but I find that I like movies that DON'T have happy endings. They seem more complicated and real. Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Empire Strikes Back, Of Mice and Men, Sommersby, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, stuff like that. Then again, I like nonsensical comedies, too, like anything from the Marx Brothers or Monty Python or Peter Sellers. Blazing Saddles. Young Frankenstein. I coudl go on all day...

Shindlers List
The Natural
The Matrix
Star Wars
Princess Bride
Coming to America
Enter the Dragon
Inherit the Wind
To kill a mockingbird

are a few that rise to the top for me.

I thought you all might find this interesting [ http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/08/16/movie-playlist-quentin-tarantinos-top-20-films-to-be-released-since-he-became-a-filmmaker/ ] Tarantinos top 20 pick of films since he started making movies.

most of the movies mentioned so far are fairly high on my list as well. Princess bride and Amelie are my faves to watch when Im hanging out with my sisters now they are older (it used to be flubber, sad but true, but then I had 7 younger siblings to keep entertained and they all loved it)

Shawshank Redemption

Amelie
Magnolia
Shindler's list
Pulp Fiction
Full Metal Jacket
The Godfather 1 and 2
Lord of the ring (all)

Does anyone else watch Anime movies? I just recently watched Akira again. Great flick.

said Sheriff Pablo on August 22, 2009 1:18 AM.

Sheriff, you and I have similar tastes. Fight Club without doubt is #1 for me. All the rest come in no particular order:

Kill Bill
Moulin Rouge
The Godfather
American Movie
Iron Giant
Singin in the Rain
Magnolia
The King of Comedy
The Conversation

Filmmakers that I'll watch anything by without question:

David Fincher
Martin Scorcese
Nick Broomfield

Then there are films I saw recently which I found astonishing, but too early to know if they'll make it on the list:

Wall*e
The Assasination of Jesse James

said Scaramouch on August 22, 2009 8:59 AM.

I found it interesting that both Schindler's List and The Pianist have been mentioned. I love them both, but they are so hard to watch I can't have them in my favorites. Because of rewatchability.

I'm really impressed with some of people's choices. I'm going to add to mine.

11. King Kong - 1933
12. Rear Window
13. Singin' In the Rain - I'm dead serious
14. Casablanca
15. The Apartment
16. Jaws
17. The Shawshank Redemption
18. Peter Pan - 1953
19. The Maltese Falcon
20. Ghostbusters
21. Once Upon a Time in the West
22. Goodfellas
23. O Brother Where Art Thou?
24. Bringing Up Baby
25. All the President's Men

Okay, I'm done.

said Johnny Wright on August 22, 2009 9:29 AM.

Forgot a couple.

Grind House (cheez-o-rama, but i can watch it over and over)

Das Boot - Picked it up in my time in Germany.

Dr. Strangelove

A Clockwork Orange

Full Metal Jacket

2001

If Kubrick and Tarantino had ever made a movie together i think my head would exploded from the sheer awesomeness, unfortunately Kubrick gets "Eyes wide shut" as a legacy.

said Sheriff Pablo on August 22, 2009 11:09 AM.

I love Grind House, Sheriff. Love.

said Johnny Wright on August 22, 2009 12:45 PM.

On the filmmakers to see without question:

Paul Thomas Anderson
Tarantino
Scorsece
Jean Piere Jeunet
Sofia Coppola

Kevin Smith

said Sheriff Pablo on August 22, 2009 8:42 PM.

I generally like John Sayles stuff. Matewan is a fave. It's hard to get and not many people probably saw it back in the day but I really dug it.

I think Todd Phillips (Road Trip, Old School, The Hangover) is the John Landis, Harold Ramis, Ivan Reitman of the day. Good, rude fun.

Blazing Saddles might have made me laugh more than anything else. Great to watch with your buds, hanging out having some brews. Need to see it unedited though, IMHO.

said E on August 23, 2009 1:41 AM.

Big fan of Fight Club and Pulp Fiction too.

Cant believe I forgot Blazing Saddles!

Bart: Are we awake?
Jim: We're not sure. Are we... black?
Bart: Yes, we are.
Jim: Then we're awake... but we're very puzzled.

I Nearly died Laughing.

said Sheriff Pablo on August 23, 2009 10:42 AM.

I dont know how I managed to forget the castle. Kenny is another one, I pissed some people off watching that on the plane because I was lauging so hard. Classic movie.

said Evangeline on August 23, 2009 11:07 PM.

Anyone visiting Australia would do themselves a service by watching The Castle.
It's Aussie humor at its purest and finest. Although I honestly didn't get it when I first arrived, and had to walk my mother through it years later.

Just watched Inglorious Basterds at the cinema. It was brilliant and will probably be QT's most underrated.

said Chad on August 24, 2009 7:37 AM.

Chad, I dont know that someone visiting aus for the first time would really get any value out of watching The Castle... its such inate aussie humour. The car scene for example... you really have to know aussie culture to understand why thats funny. its the same reason that movies like the breakfast club and 16 candles arent huge in australia.

said Evangeline on August 25, 2009 12:33 AM.

You're right Evangeline.
"It's the vibe of the thing"

said Chad on August 26, 2009 6:40 AM.

O Brother Where Art Thou! I could watch that again and again and laugh and laugh. I know those people in real life!

Well, not George Clooney, but the characters, you know...

said Miss Cellania on August 28, 2009 11:23 AM.

Robert Redford in..."Jeremiah Johnson."
This movie has it all....action, drama, humor, love, death, survival, jerky....

said EffenIdontcare on September 1, 2009 11:50 PM.

Ok, I have to give credits too, "Inglourious Basterds!"
Brad Pitt, earns his keep. "Killin' Nazi's".

said EffenIdontcare on September 11, 2009 11:08 PM.

Since Evangeline only asked for ONE movie that defined your live as "your favorite," my all-time favorite will always be "Brazil." This is required viewing, not only for the impossibly raving plot, but for the filmmaking itself.

It really does hurt to watch (which means it's working, it's forcing me to THINK) because it's about an alternate world in 1985, and in this fictional world the entire society as a whole is falling apart, the madmen and the rich and powerful are running the show, it's sheer craziness to keep up with the constant rules imposed on the public almost every day, there'sa a certain amount of fluid and child-like absurdity of how the truth is presented and how it is strangled, manipulated and raped through the government-run media, and... and...

Oh.

said Johnny Chicago on September 24, 2009 11:14 AM.

Sounds like a good one Johnny C. I will have to have a look.

said Evangeline on September 24, 2009 7:11 PM.

That's a tough one ... so many favorites.

I guess if I had to pick one, it would have to be one that I never tire of and am willing to watch anytime, anywhere.

Casablanca is my pick, mainly because it is such a classic. I not only get a great movie with a great plot, but also get to experience the WW2 era from a different perspective through some of the greatest actors of that time.

Honorable mention to Gods and Generals, The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in the West.

said Tim on September 26, 2009 6:19 PM.

Ok, Jeremiah Johnson, is my first pick.....

My face, is thanks to Sheriff!!!!
