Worst Accent Ever

Listening to lots of Boston pundits over the past few days has got me reaching for the earplugs. It's really a horrible accent.

(Henry Higgins to Harvard Yard STAT!)

I'm not sure the BAWston drawl is worse then the heavy Brutlyn (Brooklyn) accent my 50-something neighbor flaunts.

What's the worst accent in your opinion? And why?

I've done extensive research on this topic and came to the conclusion that the Staten Island accent is indeed the worst accent imaginable. Here's why: it combines the worst parts of the Brooklyn, Long Island, and New Jersey accents into one horrible mash-up of nasal pitches and aggravated harsh consonants.

In some strange way, I feel like Peter Griffin has made the Boston accent more tolerable for me these past few years.

Hmm. Good question B. I'm not sure. Barbara Streisand used to sound pretty horrible. That might be Brooklyn. Might be just her though.

I used to live in Mass. The people I hung around with didn't have accents, or had the standard/general US one.

What did irk me was when guys like Mike Barnicle would talk with one. It seemed fake. His schtick was that he was a blue collar tough guy despite the fact he was a tv pundit/dipshit. That's wicked dumb Mikey!

I had a roomate who was born in Scotland but who had lived in the US since like middle school. She sometimes talked in an accent, sometimes not. That was annoying. Make up your mind yo!

If that Fran Drescher chick was from Staten Island, then I vote with Echowood. That shit is painful.

it's tough to sound intelligent with a thick southern accent. But I don't think it's as bad as Southy Boston or Jersey Shore.

So much of it comes down to how ignorant they sound. A southern drawl can be downright pleasant if well spoken. The best example is Shelby Foote featured in Ken Burns Civil War . I've heard some grating accents in South Africa and England but when my fellow Minnesotans who butcher the language makes my skin crawl. Think "Fargo" but talking in an aggressive tone.

I would have to agree with Sheriff Pablo on this one if we're staying within the US.
If we wander out to the rest of the world, it would have to be a strong afrikaans accent. So nasal and annoying, eh bro?

Tommy my man.
Sucks that that whore stole your wine. That's bitches for you though dude.
And I would have to agree with Afrikaans. It just sounds dirty.

Ha! Have you heard my accent?

Fez, from That 70's show. He sounds like he's the love child of Tattoo from 'Fantasy Island' and Balki from that show 'Perfect Strangers'.

As someone actually from Boston, I'm inclined to agree that the accent is a bad one (you don't hear it much *in* Boston, it's more along the townie zones on the North & South shore, but whatever)

But nothing even comes close to the bible-belt drawls. Those things make my teeth itch.

Surprised no one in the UK has jumped in with a suggestion.
Isn't cockney an accent. How bout them Scots from the highlands?

Canadians too. Droppin them As and Os

What was dick van dyke's accent in Mary Poppins? That one was pretty annoying.

I think the worst one is the one you weren't born with but want to acquire--think Madonna trying to sound British, for example.

You can always tell where someone is REALLY from when they get mad and yell---no hiding the true roots then.

And to me, a male Boston accent a la Good Will Hunting is sexy.
Maybe it was just Matt and Ben....

not sure.

We've been missing you and your sarcasm here.

Ho have you been?

"You can always tell where someone is REALLY from when they get mad and yell---no hiding the true roots then." - Very true. My husband has a very mellow accent for a Bajan (living with me has probably mellowed it out a lot) but when he gets pissed you cant miss the accent at all. Its quite funny actually. There are a lot of "rassholes" and "gahblineyes" too which always makes me giggle.
